GLOUCESTER – Helen Mary (Avedisian) Powers, 90, died May 3, 2013. She was born June 22, 1922, in Lawrence, Massachusetts to Ruth (Parks) and George Avedisian. When she was ten, she moved to her mother’s home city of Gloucester. She graduated from Gloucester High School, class of 1939.
She was married to Dr. Francis Powers for sixty-one years. She assisted her husband with his podiatry office on Dale Avenue.
She loved to travel and enjoyed trips throughout the United States and abroad and ocean cruises with her daughter.
Through the years, she was active in several local organizations and also served as President of the Auxiliary to the Massachusetts Podiatry Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Powers of Gloucester; three sons, Francis (Janet) Powers, Jr. of Pennsylvania, Ronald (Marie) Powers of Texas, and David (Nancy) Powers of Arizona; her grandson, Ron-Michael (Anthony) Powers; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Powers, Alexander Hough and Sydney-Kate Hough (and their father, Shane Hough), her brother, Robert Avedisian, many nieces and nephews including Marjorie Burns and Lois Arnold. She was predeceased by her husband, granddaughter, Kathleen Powers Hough, daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Rowe Powers, sister, Willa Hill, brothers, John Avedisian and George Avedisian, Jr.
In keeping with her wishes, services will be private. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Donations may be made in her memory to Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church, 70 Pleasant St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester.

BEVERLY: Stanley J. Kalman, 86, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in Topsfield following an extended illness. He was the husband of the late Cynthia (Chase) Kalman who died in 2010.
Born in Malden on April 15, 1927, he was the son of the late Harry and Minnie (Linsky) Kalman. He had resided in Natick for over 50 years before moving to Beverly in 2009 to be closer to his son and his family.
Stanley was the youngest of four brothers all of whom predeceased him. He left high school to join the Navy and was stationed in Guam and Japan shortly after the end of World War II. Upon returning to the United States, he worked briefly with his father as a roofer and with a brother where he learned to repair power tools. He then started his own power tool repair business which he ran until he was well into his 70’s. Stanley enjoyed American history, cars, old movies and his cat, Handsome Fella.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David Kalman and Tina Buchs of Beverly; beloved granddaughter, Rachel Kalman of Beverly; his niece, Audrey Brown of Hyannis and her daughter Laura Currey and son-in law Wayne Currey of Wellfleet.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8th in the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 225 Cabot Street, Beverly at 11a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem MA 01970.

Loring J. “Butch” Ward, Jr., 59, died Sunday evening, June 9, 2013 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness.
Born in Beverly on July 29, 1953, he was the son of the late Sally I. Ward. He was raised and educated in Beverly and was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1971. He later graduated from the New England Institute at Mount Ida College with a degree in Funeral Service.
For fifteen years, he was employed as a funeral director at C.R. Lyons & Sons in Danvers until the time of his retirement. He had previously been employed by Campbell Funeral Home in Beverly.
A Beverly resident for many years, Butch resided in Danvers for more than ten years. He was the longtime chairman of the Beverly Board of Cemetery Commissioners. He was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed spending time at his camp at Acres of Wildlife in Steep Falls, Maine.
He is survived by his daughter, Caitlyn Ward of Danvers, his girlfriend, Sue O’Neil of Groveland, his former wife, Kelly Pierce of Danvers, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
His Funeral Service will be Friday, June 14, 2013 at 11AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Burial will follow in North Beverly Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Thursday in the funeral home from 5-8PM. Elsa Misins Pooler 6/10/2013 Beverly, MA

BEVERLY: Elsa Misins Pooler, 92, formerly of Cedar Street, died Monday, June 10, 2013 in the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Paul Pooler who died in 1982. Born in Riga, Latvia on September 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Gobzemis.
As a young widow and mother, Elsa was forced by the raging wars in Europe to flee her beloved Latvia seeking safety for her family. Eventually, she and her two children were able to emigrate to the United States in 1952 to their new home in Hamilton. After her marriage to Paul Pooler, the family relocated to Beverly.
Elsa worked for many years as a private housekeeper before beginning a long career with Beverly Hospital in Housekeeping and later as Transport Supervisor. During those years, her knowledge of several European languages, including Latvian, German, Russian and Polish, was often called upon to translate for patients and staff. While her career at Beverly Hospital was of immense pride to her, for many of her family and friends she will be lovingly remembered for her cooking, especially her sauerkraut and awesome bacon rolls.
Elsa is survived by her son and daughter-in-law George and Paulette Misins of Beverly; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and David Webb of Nantucket; son William Pooler of Florida; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Robert Grzybinski of Gloucester; as well as 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her sons, John and Paul Pooler, daughter Velta Kariores, and grandson, Michael Grzybinski.
Her funeral service will be privately held in North Beverly Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.

AMHERST, NH: Enrico G. Lauranzano, 90, formerly of Beverly, died Sunday, June 9, 2013 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Veteran’s Medical Center, Manchester, New Hampshire following an extended illness. He was the devoted and loving husband of Donna (Gordon) Lauranzano and the former husband of Frances (Grothaus) Lauranzano (deceased).
Born in Beverly on May 18, 1923, he was the son of the late Natale and Colomba (Marcucci) Lauranzano. He had resided in Beverly for many years before moving to Amherst, New Hampshire. Mr. Lauranzano, along with two bothers was a combat veteran in the US Army during WWII. He was an avid football player and graduate of Beverly High School, class of 1941 and Vesper George School of Art. He, along with his sister Joanna and several others was a founding member and Past Commander of the Vittori-Rocci Post of Beverly and was instrumental in organizing a visit from former heavy weight boxer Rocky Marciano in the early 50′s.
After retiring from his career as a purchasing agent he, along with his wife Donna, began to fulfill his life long dream of becoming an artist. Specializing in pen and ink his favorite topics were landscapes. His passion for art took him to Italy to present a piece to the Mayor of his grandparents village as well as to several shows and donations to silent auctions. Along with his art, Mr. Lauranzano took time to collect, organize, write and publish a narrative of his families history. Mr. Lauranzano embraced his love for art, his heritage and his family in many ways and will be sorely missed by family, friends and especially his devoted wife Donna.
In addition to his wife of twenty-six years, he is survived by his daughters, Patricia Grothaus, Judith Rich and her husband, William,; three sons, Richard, Kenneth and Thomas Lauranzano and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Natale, Rafael, Guido Lauranzano, Sr. Frances Lauranzano and Phyllis Willey along with her husband John. From his wife Donna Gordon Lauranzano, he is survived by sisters-in-law, Nina Bourque and her husband Roland, Coral Hazen and her husband William, brothers-in-law, Richard Gordon and his wife Connie and Ronald Gordon and deceased sister in law April Moore as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday in St. John the Evangelist Church, New Balch St., Beverly at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly from 8 – 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Manchester VA Medical Center, 718 Smyth Rd., Manchester, NH 03104. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beverly.

BEVERLY: Mary G. (McCraven) Buchanan, 87, beloved wife of Joseph A. Buchanan, Sr. with whom she shared over sixty years of marriage, passed away June 11, 2013 after a lengthy illness.
Mary was a life long resident of Beverly and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She was also a devout member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Beverly and it’s Ladies’ Sodality. Prior to marrying she worked at United Shoe Machinery in Beverly. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Hugh and Margaret (McDonald) McCraven, her brothers Hugh McCraven Jr., Philip McCraven & Joseph McCraven and her nephew, Kirk McCraven.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Joseph A. Buchanan Jr. and his wife, Agnes (Novack) Buchanan of Salem; her daughters, Alice Buchanan McNeil of Salem, Kathleen (Buchanan) Novack and her husband, Raymond of Beverly and Mary Ellen (Buchanan) Fullerton and her husband, David of Beverly. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kelly Novack of Beverly, Bonnie McNeil of Oakland, CA, Adam Fullerton of Somerville, Erica Novack of Hingham, Christopher McNeil of Anchorage, AK, Ryan Buchanan of Salem, and Tania Buchanan of Salem and also her nephews, Robert McCraven of Newbury, Mark Lutz of Wilmington and her niece Maureen (McCraven) Woodward of Ipswich.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly from 5 – 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Her funeral service will be private. Mr. Timothy H. Lordan, a lifelong resident of Medford, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday evening, June 19, 2013. He was 42 years old.
Born in Melrose, Massachusetts, on July 23, 1970, he was the beloved son of Henry F. and Betty L. (Cudmore) Lordan. Mr. Lordan was a graduate of Medford High School. Tim was a dedicated worker and was the general manager for Independent Systems Distributors, Inc. in Wakefield, for many years.
Tim was an avid sports fan and he loved spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. He also loved music.
Besides his loving parents, Tim will be very sorely missed by his devoted siblings; Michael H. and his wife Pamela J. Lordan of Atkinson, New Hampshire, David H. Lordan of Beverly, Kerri A. and her husband Steven M. DiDonato of Rockport, Daniel H. and his wife Nicole M. Lordan of Malden, Mark H. and his wife Andrea M. Lordan of Beverly, James H. Lordan of Medford and Erin K. and her husband Lemario Dotson of Beverly and nieces and nephews; Jerald, Vincent, Brianna, Amber, Joseph, Jared, Ashlynne, Lemario, Jr. and Makenna. He was also the brother of the late Steven H. Lordan.

Patricia (O’Brien) Gonyea, 83 of Swampscott and formerly of Beverly, died June 22, 2013 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Gonyea.

Born in Boston and raised in Revere, she was the daughter of the late James and Marion (Tuohy) O’Brien. Following her completion of secretarial school, she began working in the executive offices of New England Telephone Co. She retired as an executive secretary in February of 1978 with 30 years and 4 months with the company.

Patsy married her devoted friend Bob in 1964 and the couple lived in Beverly throughout their married life together. Shortly after Bob’s passing in 1993 she moved to Swampscott.

Pat leaves several nieces and nephews and her dear friends, Jeanne Burke of Quincy, Janice Kersker of Beverly and Karen Gamble of Peabody as well as her dear feline companion, Mr. Moto.

A private graveside service is being planned at a later date. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are by the Levesque Funeral Home of Salem. Richard J. “Dick” Essler, 49, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2013 in Lahey Clinic Burlington following a brief illness.
Born in Beverly on February 22, 1964, he was the son of Thomas and Jean (Hook) Essler of South Carolina. He was raised and educated in Beverly and graduated from the Essex Agricultural School in Danvers in 1982. He served our country with the United States Coastguard. Dick had been employed with the Ira Group in Danvers for over five years. Dick enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved fishing and camping with his family.
Besides his parents he is survived by his former wife Cynthia (Allen) Essler, his children, Steven, John and Kristen Essler, all of Lynn, his brother David and his wife Ruth Essler of SC and his sister Deborah Essler of Bradford, his nieces, Jennifer and Hillary Essler and his friend JoAnn Spiller of CA.
Dick’s family will received friends and family on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 from 4-7PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. All other services are private. Charles E. McInnis, 93, died peacefully on Tuesday July 9, 2013 at the Herrick House in Beverly where he resided since 2005. He was the husband of the late Margaret L. (Barrett) McInnis who past in 2007, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
He was raised in Danvers and graduated from Holten High School, Class of 1938. He then served honorably in the U.S. Navy, a veteran of both WWII and Korea.
After graduating from the Lowell Institute, he was employed as an engineer with the former United Shoe Manufacturing Corp. in Beverly prior starting his own business in 1967.
Charlie and his wife Margaret enjoyed their retirement by traveling the world and doing what they could to help others.
A longtime Danvers resident and a communicant of St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, he was Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Thomas E. Power Council #1505, a Town Meeting Member for many years, and also served on the town’s Finance Committee.
He is survived by his children, Charles E. McInnis, Jr. and his wife Estelle of FL, James F. McInnis of Beverly, Maureen Emery and her husband Kenneth of Danvers, and Patricia Taatjes and her husband David of Danvers, his grandchildren, Matthew McInnis, Alexa McInnis, Keith Emery and his wife Britt, Meghan Brevard and her husband Jessie, and Christopher and Allison Taatjes, two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Isabelle, a brother, James McInnis of Danvers, two sisters, Annie Zaremba of Chelsea and Florence Mackey of Salem, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Joseph “Bill” McInnis, Mary Simard, Elizabeth Perry, and Priscilla Comeau.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 9AM in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Mary Regina Maestranzi Bourque, 64, died peacefully Monday at her home in Beverly, surrounded by her loving, heartbroken family. Mary was born in Beverly on January 11, 1949 to Simon A. and Delfina T. Maestranzi, and always remarked how blessed she was to have siblings who were also her best friends. Mary had so many life adventures with her two daughters, Sarah and Leah, whom she adored, and with her husband and friend of 31 years, Richard J. Bourque. Her exploring included more than 30 visits to San Francisco, two trips to Africa (including a month of volunteer nursing service), and travels to England, St. Barth’s, New Mexico, and Italy. She found daily joy in sharing her fun, openhearted and independent spirit with lifelong friends in Beverly. Mary might be found hosting a dinner for her retired veteran friends, tutoring a struggling high school student, trimming a neighbor’s hedges, or making someone in the final moments of life more happy and comfortable. She especially treasured lively and limitless conversations, and spending days with her beautiful granddaughter, Delphine Amma Kwaa, who will miss her Nonna so.

Mary was a nurse at Shaughnessy Hospital, a lab technician at New England Biolabs, an English literature major who insisted on going back for her degree in her 40s, a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a lector at St. Mary’s for many years. She more recently joined the board of Beyond Stage 4, a non-profit committed to finding a cure for late stage breast cancer. Mary was aptly voted Miss Congeniality in the Miss Pink pageant two springs ago. She was a poet, artist, inventor, handyman, chef, gardener, problem solver, dear friend, devoted grandmother, cherished sibling, and the most hardworking, loving, creative and wonderful mother anyone could have.

In addition to her beloved husband and granddaughter, Mary leaves behind her daughters; Sara Elizabeth Jones and her partner Gregory Sutton of Oakland, CA, and Leah Caroline Jones and her husband Kwandwo Kwaa of Beverly. She is also survived by her dear siblings; Leo J. Maestranzi and his wife Joanne of Wenham, Rita Cavoli and her husband Ivo of VA, Richard Maestranzi and his wife Maureen of Wenham and Anne Cottle and her husband Robert of Beverly, a brother-in-law Charles Jones and his wife Claudia of Beverly, and several nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 11:00a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment is private. An open house celebration of her life will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 pm at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club, 134 McKay Street, Beverly. Peter S. Carbone Jr., passed away on Wednesday, July 10th after a lengthy illness.
Born in Salem on Sept 10, 1925, he was the son of the late Peter S. and Margaret (Lettich) Carbone. Peter was raised and educated in Salem, and joined the US Navy in 1943 serving aboard the famed battleship U.S.S. South Dakota. During his navy service he earned a total of 12 battle stars. The Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal (10) stars, Phillipine Liberation Medal (2) stars, World War II Victory Medal, and American Theater Medal, participating in many of the naval battles of the Pacific, and was aboard the U.S.S. South Dakota, which was Admiral Nimitz flagship at anchor in Tokyo Harbor during the official Japanese surrender.
After his discharge from the navy, Peter began a 43-year career with the railroad. He began his career with the B&M railroad working in freight, and then moved over to the commuter rail service. He then transferred over to Amtrak when they took over the MBTA contract for the commuter rail in the mid 1980’s. Peter retired from Amtrak in 1989 completing over 43 years of service without utilizing a sick day.
He married his wife Patricia (Waldron) Carbone in 1953 and together they raised 6 children in Salem, and then Danvers after moving there in 1976. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 1011 in Peabody for over 60 years. He lived his life for his family, and will be remembered for his smile, generosity, kindness, and caring nature.
Peter was pre-deceased by his first wife of 53 years Patricia in 2006. He is survived by his wife Louise (Connolly), 6 children, Patricia Sanderson & her husband Gary, Barbara Moroney & her husband Mark, both of Danvers; Donna Modugno & her husband Arthur of Beverly; Cindy Larrabee & her husband Alan of Windham, NH; Joseph Carbone & his wife Joanne of Peabody; Peter Carbone & his wife Tracy of Oakham, his step son Paul Pettinato and his wife Andrea of Weston; 15 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchild. He is also survived by 4 siblings John Carbone of Salem, Robert Carbone of Danvers, Louise Casey of Beverly, Marie O’Hara of Texas, and many nieces and nephews. His siblings Joseph and Mark Carbone, Lucille McInnis, and Marjorie Haefner predeceased him.
The family would like to thank the staff at North Shore & Greater Boston Hospice for the kind, compassionate care shown to Peter these last few months.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in Saint Mary Star of the Sea Church, 253 Cabot St., Beverly. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Hobart St., Danvers. Born in Cambridge on November 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Marion (Chamberlain) Thompson. Grace was a longtime resident of both Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea. She was a graduate of Story High School class of 1939 and graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School.
During World War II, she worked for the U.S. Government in Presque Isle, Maine. Grace retired form the Beverly Hospital where she worked for many years. In her retirement she enjoyed crossword puzzles, bingo and watching the Boston Red Sox. She had a lovely singing voice and was especially fond of the music of Frank Sinatra.
Grace is survived by her loving family, daughters, Brenda Duryea and her husband, Bill of Beverly and Donna Cormier and her husband, Walt Pavlo of Manchester-by-the-Sea; her son, Hardy Nalley and his wife, Betsy of Manchester-by-the-Sea; six grandchildren, Mandy McCormack and her husband, Chad, Kristy Walker and her husband, Andrew, Will and Kelsey Duryea, Kirk Nalley and his wife, Sandie and Sarah Schad and her husband, Cory; five great-grandchildren, Megan and Kaitlyn McCormack, Tanner and Elisa Nalley and Abigail Schad; three sisters, Sally Carney and her husband, Peter, Dorothy Waszak and Lorraine Keane and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Bernice Thompson and a brother-in-law, Joseph Waszak.
Her funeral service will by held on Saturday in the Rosedale Cemetery, Manchester-by-the-Sea at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the charity of one’s choice.

Vera M. (Davis) Balsley, 90, died Tuesday morning, July 30, 2013. She was the wife of the late Carl F. Balsley, with whom she shared forty-one years of marriage.
Born in Cumberland, MD on July 8, 1923, she was the daughter of George and Mildred (McKinney) Davis. She was raised and educated in Cumberland and was a graduate of the Catherman Secretarial School. She had been a resident of Beverly since 1996.
She had been employed as a secretary at the University of Maryland, Catholic Charities, and Beverly Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Susan Balsley, her grandchildren, Michael and Sarah Balsley, both of Danvers, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Carl F. Balsley, Jr.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 9AM in Saint Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 3-5PM in C.R. Roger Howard Williams, 65, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family in the Kaplan Family Hospice House on August 6, 2013.
Born on June 5, 1948 in Danvers, he was the son of the late Howard and Evelyn (Saulnier) Williams. He was resided and educated in Danvers and graduated from Danvers High School in 1967. Roger served his country with the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served three tours aboard the USS Hancock from 1968-1972 and was honorably discharged. Roger had retired from Varian Semiconductor in Gloucester and had been previously employed by Parker Brothers and Sylvania for many years. Roger was an avid builder and inventor. He also enjoyed vacationing to Maine and Cape Cod.
He is survived by his companion of 23 years, Charlene L .Fitzgerald of Manchester-by-the-Sea, a daughter, Amy A. Thompson and her husband Bill of Peabody, a son Andrew R. Williams and his fiancée Michelle Kloack of Beverly, a brother Donald S. Williams and his wife Gloria of Rochester, NH and a sister Mildred Frost and her husband Al of Peabody. He was predeceased by his wife Ann (Rubchinuk) Williams.
His Graveside Funeral will be celebrated at 11AM on Monday, August 12, 2013 in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Pine St., Manchester-by-the-Sea. Visiting hours are Friday from 4-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers, MA, 01923. EXETER, NH: Bruce W. Mailhoit, 53, formerly of Hamilton, died peacefully at his home in Exeter on Friday, August 9, 2013.
Born in Beverly on April 17, 1960, he was the son of Theresa C. (Cronin) Mailhoit and the late Raymond D. Mailhoit, Sr. Bruce was a graduate of North Shore Technical High School. He grew up in Hamilton and moved to San Francisco, California, where he resided for many years before moving to New Hampshire over twenty years ago.
Bruce worked as an electrician for several firms in New Hampshire and Massachusetts for many years. He enjoyed camping and boating and he especially loved to spend time with his family, friends and his pets.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughter, Alexis Mailhoit; three sisters, Linda Trask and her husband, Robert, Carol Remsen and Cynthia Churchill and her husband, Kevin; three brothers, Robert Mailhoit, Raymond Mailhoit, Jr. and his wife, Laurieann and John Mailhoit and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral service will be privately held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours.

Mr. Philip ‘Phil” Pergola Jr., beloved husband of the late Dorothy T. (Mason) Pergola, passed away Tuesday, August 13th, 2013, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family.
Phil was born and raised in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was the son of the late Filippo and Sadie (Vitale) Pergola and was one of 16 close-knit children. After graduating from Lynn Classical High School, Phil joined the United States Army. He served our country with pride for thirty-five years, climbing the ranks and earning numerous awards, until retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1971. After Phil’s honorable discharge, he worked as a Sales Representative at Armour Foods for over 25 years.
Phil was a dedicated member of the North Shore Community Baptist Church in Beverly Farms, Ma. Together, Phil and his late wife, Dottie, revitalized and enthusiastically led the Sunshine Circle for 12 years. It was a favorite monthly luncheon for the local seniors from the community. In addition to Phil’s involvement in the church, he was an active and accomplished Master Mason at the Mosaic Lodge in Danvers, Ma. Lastly, he was a proud member of the Alleppo Shrine Temple of Wilmington, Ma.
Phil was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle. He loved to go out to lunch with Dottie at the Clambox and go on scenic drives to Maine. He shared a special bond with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him “papa”. The Pergola clan loved family dinners with home-cooked sauce, meatballs and “papa’s bread”. He was a true friend to many; his generosity, kindness and thoughtfulness were admirable and he could easily light up a room. Over the years, Phil shared his love for painting and art with friends and family. His favorite paintings were of lighthouses and boat scenes on rocks that he and Dottie gathered on Rye Beach in New Hampshire.
Phil is survived by his three daughters, Nancy Flaherty, Dorothy Farr and her husband Peter, Debra Jones and her husband Robert, and his son, Philip Pergola and his wife Susan. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren, Joe, Kristen, Kimberly, Michael, Kerry, Stephen, P. Jay, and Bradford, his 6 brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: – His funeral service will be held in the North Shore Community Baptist Church, 9 Hart Street, Beverly Farms Friday, August 23rd, at 9 A.M. Relatives and friends invited. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting hours will be held at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors. 28 Elm Street, Danvers Square, Danvers, Thursday, August 22nd, from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. BEVERLY: Robert C. Rogers, 78, of 20 Sohier Road, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 in the Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was the beloved husband of Louise A. (Prunier) Rogers.
Born in Chelsea on August 30, 1934, he was the son of Robert and Bertha (Provencial) Rogers. Robert had resided in Lynn for many years before moving Cheifland, Florida for several years and finally settling in Beverly four years ago.
Robert was employed as an electrician for Duffy Electrical in Lynn for many years before his retirement in 1999. He was an avid New England Patriots fan and enjoyed playing in a men’s softball league in Lynn for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Robert, Bryan and Dean Rogers and Fred Peabody and three daughters, Jodi Evans, Sherry Demand and Michell Knudson. He was also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
His funeral service will be held on Friday in the Grondin Funeral home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly at 12 noon. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. Born in Beverly on April 21, 1956, she was the beloved daughter of Edward and Ruth (Rhoades) Bartnicki of Salem. Pam was a graduate of Beverly High School class of 1974. She had resided in Redondo Beach, California for twenty-five years before moving to Bellingham, Washington several years ago. An active member of Christ the King Community Church in Bellingham, she loved to sing in the Hopeful Sound Choir. Having lived on both coasts, she loved the ocean and long walks in nature. She cherished her family and many close friends who touched her life. She will be dearly missed and remembered by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Kenyon Burch; four sons, Chris, Casey, Shon and Chad Burch; two grandchildren, Eli and Grace Burch; two sisters, Karen Bartnicki and Wendy Ventura and her husband, Rich; one brother, Nick Bartnicki and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Friday, September 6th in the Grondin Funeral Home, 376 Cabot St., Beverly from 5 – 8 p.m. Her funeral service was held on Tuesday in Christ the King Community Church in Bellingham. Mr. Robert J. Langlais 91 of Danvers, formerly of Beverly, beloved husband of 68 years to the late Denise R. (LeBrun) Langlais, died August 31 surrounded by members of his family.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Arthur and Antoinette (Simard) Langlais. He was raised and educated in Salem.
Mr. Langlais had been employed with Sylvania at its Boston Street plant in Salem where he met the love of his life, Denise. After serving in the Navy during WWII as a Torpedoman’s Mate, 1st Class, Robert returned to Salem and wed Denise.
They moved to Beverly in the mid-1950’s where they devoted their love and energy to raising their family. Robert belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the community and a communicant of St. Mary Star of the Sea church. Mr. Langlais was a Quality Control specialist at Sylvania, Metcom, and lastly at Wang Laboratories at the time of his retirement.
More recently, Robert moved to Danvers and had been an active member of the Danvers Senior Center and communicant of St. Mary of the Annunciation Church in Danvers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Robert is survived by his brother, Richard, sons Philip Langlais and his wife Susan of Norfolk, Virginia, Richard Langlais and his wife Karen of Ipswich, Robert Langlais and his partner Robert Stewart of Sarasota, Florida, and Michael Langlais and his wife Yuka of Danvers, his eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held from C.R. Lyons & sons Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square, Saturday Sept. 7th, At 8:15 A.M. followed by his funeral mass in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Conant St., Danvers at 9 A.M.
